A plywood label shows the grade (MR, BWR or BWP), thickness in millimetres, batch number and date code, and the BIS ISI mark with its CML licence number, which you can verify to confirm the manufacturer. Missing or blurred details are a red flag.

The ISI mark on plywood means the sheet is certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards against a specific code: IS 303 for general-purpose plywood, IS 710 for marine plywood and IS 4990 for shuttering plywood. Always check the code and CML licence number.

E1 is the formaldehyde emission class for MDF that meets a defined low-emission limit considered safe for general indoor use, such as wardrobes and kitchen cabinets. It emits more than E0, so pick E0 for nurseries or tightly closed rooms if the budget allows.

E0 is the lowest formaldehyde emission class for MDF and other engineered boards, with off-gassing kept to the lowest practical level and verified by desiccator or chamber tests. It is low rather than zero, which makes E0 a sound pick for bedrooms, kids' rooms and closed wardrobes.

Core veneer is the set of inner wood sheets stacked between plywood's face and back veneers; it makes up about 60-80% of the sheet's thickness and much of its strength. Gaps in the core weaken the panel even when the face looks perfect.

Face veneer is the outermost wood layer on the visible side of a plywood sheet, usually 1-1.5 mm thick, and it is the surface that takes polish, laminate or paint. Gurjan and keruing faces are popular in India for their smoother finish and better durability.

Moisture resistant (MR) plywood is the entry-level commercial grade bonded with urea-formaldehyde resin, built for dry to moderately humid indoor rooms around 40-70% relative humidity. It handles everyday humidity in wardrobes and bedrooms but fails under spills, leaks or constant wetting.

Termite resistant plywood is treated with chemicals during manufacture, especially along the glue lines that bind the veneers, to repel subterranean termites and wood borers. Look for glue line protection (GLP) and know where extra site treatment is still needed.

Fire retardant plywood is treated with chemicals that slow ignition and flame spread and reduce smoke by forming a protective char layer, and India certifies it under IS 5509. It is not fireproof, but it buys evacuation time in kitchens, offices and other fire-prone spaces.
