Plywood is made of thin wood veneers glued in layers, each ply turned 90 degrees to the next, which limits splitting and swelling and keeps strength even in every direction. Quality then depends on the wood species, the glue (UF, PF or MUF) and how well the plies bond.

An ACP (Aluminium Composite Panel) sheet is a rigid flat panel made by bonding two thin aluminium sheets to a non-aluminium core under heat and pressure. It is light, weather-resistant and easy to shape, which is why it is common on Indian facades, shopfronts and signage.

WPC board is a wood plastic composite made by extruding 40-70% wood flour with thermoplastics such as PVC or polyethylene, giving a dense board that resists water and termites. That makes it a common choice for bathroom cabinets and other wet areas.

OSB, or oriented strand board, is an engineered panel of resin-bonded wood strands pressed in three layers, with the outer strands running lengthwise and the core crosswise. Plywood uses thin veneers instead, and the two differ in moisture behaviour and availability in India.

HDF board is high density fiberboard: wood fibers, often eucalyptus or poplar, mixed with resin and wax, then pressed at over 200°C and up to 10 MPa into a uniform panel harder than MDF. It suits laminate flooring and heavy-duty uses, with moisture-resistant variants for Indian homes.

In Indian dealer talk, plyboard almost always means blockboard: a core of wooden baton strips between veneers, made for long shelves and doors that must not sag. The term has no ISI definition, and the board has clear limits in high-moisture zones.

Prelam plywood is plywood with a decorative laminate, usually 0.6mm to 1.2mm thick, hot-pressed onto one or both faces at the factory, so it needs no separate laminating or veneering. That saves finishing time on furniture and fixtures; compare types, pros, cons and buying checks.

A plywood label shows the grade (MR, BWR or BWP), thickness in millimetres, batch number and date code, and the BIS ISI mark with its CML licence number, which you can verify to confirm the manufacturer. Missing or blurred details are a red flag.

The ISI mark on plywood means the sheet is certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards against a specific code: IS 303 for general-purpose plywood, IS 710 for marine plywood and IS 4990 for shuttering plywood. Always check the code and CML licence number.
