HDHMR board size, thickness and density: quick answer (November 2026)

The standard HDHMR-type sheet is 8x4 ft (2440 x 1220 mm, 32 sq ft); Greenpanel also lists 2440 x 1830 mm (8x6 ft). Brand thickness lists run from 3mm to 25mm, with 30mm from Greenpanel and Greenply and 30-32mm boards for doors. Published densities are 825-870 kg/m3 at 18mm (Action TESA states over 850), so an 18mm 8x4 sheet weighs about 44-47 kg.

HDHMR sheet sizes: 8x4 ft is the standard

The 8x4 ft sheet (2440 x 1220 mm, 2.98 m2, 32 sq ft) is the standard: CenturyPly, Greenpanel and Greenply list it, and Action TESA HDHMR is sold in it. "HDHMR" is a registered trademark of Action TESA, and buyers often use it as a general term for high-density moisture-resistant boards, which each brand sells under its own name.

Greenpanel also lists a 2440 x 1830 mm (8x6 ft, 48 sq ft) sheet for HDWR, and CenturyPly says other sizes are available on specification. Retail listings seen in November 2026 also showed 9x6, 10x4, 7x4 and 6x4 ft sheets, so confirm stock before designing around a non-standard size.

Plan cut lists around 2440 x 1220 mm. For example, a 2100 mm tall, 600 mm deep wardrobe side fits twice across one sheet's width, leaving a 20 mm strip before saw cuts. Greenpanel's tolerances are plus or minus 0.3 mm on thickness and 3 mm per metre on length and width.

Thickness range by brand, and the in-between sizes

Fibreboard steps do not match plywood's: brands list 5.5, 7.5, 11, 16 and 16.75mm alongside 18mm. Quote the exact listed thickness on the order, because edge band width and hinge fixing follow it.

  • Thin (3-8mm): all four brands; Greenpanel adds 3.3mm.
  • Mid (11-18mm): every brand lists 16, 16.75 and 18mm; CenturyPly and Action TESA also list 12mm.
  • Thick (25-30mm): all four list 25mm; Greenpanel and Greenply add 30mm.
  • Door boards (30-32mm): Action TESA 30 and 32mm for designer doors, CenturyPly Premium Plus Door 30 and 32mm, Greenpanel HDWR Door 30mm.

Density by brand, and what it means for screws and hinges

Brands link high density to firm screw and hinge holding, but the published screw figures track grade as much as density. Greenpanel lists 1,250 N face withdrawal for all its boards, and 850 N at the edge for HDWR and Exterior MDF against 700 N for Interior MDF. IS 12406:2025, BIS's MDF standard, covers 600 to 900 kg/m3 and sets 1,250 N face and 850 N edge minimums for its MR and HMR grades at 12-19mm, so ask for the grade as well as the density.

Density also changes with thickness: Greenpanel lists HDWR at 850 kg/m3 up to 12mm, 825 at 12-19mm and 780 at 19-30mm, against 710-720 for its Interior MDF at 12-19mm. CenturyPly gives 850-870 kg/m3 for Premium Plus and 500-650 kg/m3 for plywood. Denser boiling-water-proof HDF, such as Action TESA Boilo at above 1,000 kg/m3, is a separate product.

Take density from the brand's catalogue, not the listing: some listings quote a higher figure than the brand gives, and some sell 720 kg/m3 boards under an HDHMR label. CenturyPly's carpenter manual matches screw size to board thickness:

Board thicknessMaximum screw gaugePilot hole diameter
8-9mmNo. 42 mm
12mmNo. 62.5 mm
17-18mmNo. 83 mm
25mm and aboveNo. 103.5 mm

Drill each pilot hole 2-3 mm deeper than the screw length, as the same manual advises.

HDHMR board weight: the arithmetic

Sheet weight is density multiplied by volume, and an 8x4 sheet's volume is 2.44 m x 1.22 m x its thickness in metres. At 18mm that is 0.0536 m3, so a sheet weighs 44.2 kg at Greenpanel's 825 kg/m3 and 46.6 kg at CenturyPly's upper figure of 870 kg/m3.

ThicknessVolume of an 8x4 sheetWeight at 850 kg/m3
3mm0.0089 m37.6 kg
5.5mm0.0164 m313.9 kg
8mm0.0238 m320.2 kg
12mm0.0357 m330.4 kg
16mm0.0476 m340.5 kg
18mm0.0536 m345.5 kg
25mm0.0744 m363.3 kg

Weights are a PlyPrice estimate (method: density x volume). At Greenpanel's 780 kg/m3 for 25mm, the sheet is 58.0 kg; an 18mm 8x6 sheet at 825 kg/m3 is about 66.3 kg; 18mm plywood at 500-650 kg/m3 is 26.8-34.8 kg. Plan two people per sheet and check the stair or lift route.

Which thickness for which job

Use 3-8mm for backs and drawer bottoms, 12-18mm for carcasses and shutters, 25mm and above for tops, and 30-32mm door boards for door shutters.

Price by thickness: one retailer's list

Price rises almost in step with thickness: one Bengaluru retailer listed Action TESA HDHMR plain sheets from ₹514 for 3mm to ₹4,099 for 25mm, including GST, in November 2026.

Thickness₹ per 8x4 sheet (incl. GST)₹ per sq ft

12mm1,95561.09
16mm2,48277.56
18mm2,91090.94

That is about ₹4.8-5.4 per sq ft per mm of thickness. IndiaMART and retailer listings for 18mm plain HDHMR-type boards in November 2026 mostly ran from ₹60 to ₹110 per sq ft; city rates are in HDHMR board price in India.

Working tips: cutting, edge banding, screws and hinges

Cut with carbide-tipped blades, seal or band every edge, pre-drill every screw and keep screws away from edges and corners, as CenturyPly's carpenter manual for its MDF and Premium Plus boards advises.

  • Cutting: TCT (tungsten carbide tipped) saws with at least 80-90 teeth, at 3,600 rpm or more, blade about 10 mm above the board; score pre-laminated boards first and never use a coarse rip saw.
  • Edges: seal all exposed edges, including hinge and routing cuts, immediately after sanding, then band with PVC, melamine, solid wood or aluminium strips.
  • Screws: fully threaded, parallel-shank steel screws in a zig-zag, not a straight line, at least 25 mm from corners and 70 mm from edges (75 mm in the manual's do's and don'ts); do not over-tighten.
  • Hinges: fit plastic or metal sleeves where screws will be removed often, such as kitchen shutters.
  • Storage: stack boards flat on dry battens spaced no more than 800 mm apart, carry them on edge, and let them acclimatise on site for 48-72 hours.

How to buy and verify

Confirm the exact product, thickness and licence before you pay.

  1. Write the brand's product name, thickness and size on the quote, for example "Greenpanel HDWR 16.75mm, 2440 x 1220 mm".
  2. Check the ISI mark and CM/L number. The ISI mark has been mandatory for MDF since February 2025; the licence reads "CM/L-" plus 10 digits. Verify it in the BIS Care app (Verify Licence Details) or on Manak Online (Status of Licence) (see how to check the ISI mark).
  3. Measure the delivered thickness with a vernier at a few points; Greenpanel's tolerance is plus or minus 0.3 mm.
  4. Inspect the cut edge for an even, dense core without crumbling.
  5. Get a delivered price per sheet including GST, loading, transport and any cutting, and keep the invoice and warranty card.
