Types of MDF board in India: quick answer (November 2026)

MDF (medium density fibreboard) is a panel made by pressing wood fibres with resin under heat and pressure. In India it is graded under IS 12406:2025 as REG (regular, for dry rooms), MR (moisture resistant, for humid rooms) or HMR (high moisture resistance), and brands add fire-retardant, low-emission, high-density and pre-laminated versions. Sheets are mostly 8x4 ft (2440 x 1220 mm) in thicknesses from about 1.5mm to 30mm, and brand manuals recommend 18mm for wardrobes and kitchen cabinet sides.

What is MDF board, and is it the same as engineered wood?

MDF is one type of engineered wood: a flat panel of refined wood fibres bonded with resin into a dense, smooth board with no grain. "Engineered wood" is the wider family that also includes plywood, HDF and particle board, so when a furniture listing says "engineered wood", ask which board it actually is.

IS 12406:2025 lets makers use any wood species or other lignocellulosic material and any suitable resin, as long as the finished board passes the tests. Brands describe their raw material on their own sites: VIR MDF (Rushil Décor) uses plantation-grown eucalyptus and silver oak, Greenpanel (Greenpanel Industries) says its MDF uses 100% renewable agroforestry wood, and CenturyPly (Century Plyboards India) cites FSC-certified plantation timber (FSC-C143057) for its CenturyHDF range.

Its smooth face takes paint, veneer and laminate well and suits CNC-cut screens; its weak points are water and screws driven into edges.

Types of MDF board available in India

Indian MDF comes in four practical families: plain interior (REG), moisture-resistant or "exterior" (MR), high-density moisture-resistant boards, and special boards such as fire-retardant, low-emission and pre-laminated MDF.

IS 12406:2025 classifies boards by service condition. The swelling limits below apply to 12-19mm boards, which covers the common 16.5mm, 17mm and 18mm sheets.

BIS gradeService condition in IS 12406:2025Uses the standard listsMax 24-hour swelling (12-19mm)How brands label it
REG (regular)Dry: arid, semi-arid and temperateGeneral uses, carcasses, furniture, cabinets, base for decorative finishes12%"Interior", for example Greenpanel Interior MDF (REG Grade) and Action TESA MDF (Regular/Interior)
MR (moisture resistance)Humid: subtropical and tropical dryKitchen and bathroom cabinets, base for decorative finishes8%Often "Exterior", for example Greenpanel Exterior MDF (MR Grade) and Action TESA MR/Exterior
HMR (high moisture resistance): HMR-GP general purpose, HMR-FN furnitureHigh humidity: tropical wetKitchen and bathroom cabinets, window joinery, base for decorative finishes7% (HMR-GP), 5% (HMR-FN)Check the grade printed on the board

Older stock and some brand pages still use the earlier labels "Grade I" (exterior or water resistant) and "Grade II" (interior), as CenturyPly's DWR and DIR and Greenply (Greenply Industries) MDF Exterior and Interior pages do. BIS gave licensed makers until 9 August 2026 to switch, so check the grade printed on each board.

Plain interior MDF (REG)

Interior MDF is the standard board for dry rooms: bedroom wardrobes, TV units, wall panels, study furniture and painted shutters. Greenpanel's catalogue says its Interior MDF should not be exposed to dampness or high humidity. Examples: Greenpanel Interior MDF (REG Grade), Action TESA MDF (Regular/Interior), CenturyPly DIR (Densified Interior Range), Greenply MDF Interior and VIR PRO.

Moisture-resistant or "exterior" MDF (MR)

MR-grade MDF has a tighter swelling limit and suits humid rooms and kitchen or bathroom cabinets that stay out of direct water. Brands often call it "exterior" grade, but Action TESA describes its MR/Exterior board as suited to covered, non-wet exposure, not direct rain or standing water, and IS 12406:2025 itself recommends MDF for interior locations. Examples: Greenpanel Exterior MDF (MR Grade), Action TESA MR/Exterior, CenturyPly DWR (Densified Water Resistant), Greenply MDF Exterior and VIR PROPLUS.

High-density moisture-resistant boards (HDHMR-type)

These are denser fibre boards, with brand-stated densities of about 825-870 kg/m³ or more, sold for modular kitchens and wardrobes in humid cities. Buyers often use "HDHMR" as a general term for this board type, but HDHMR is a registered trademark of Action TESA, so each brand's own name is used here: Action TESA HDHMR (above 850 kg/m³), Greenpanel HDWR (825 kg/m³ at 12-19mm), Greenply 710 HDMR, CenturyPly Premium Plus (850-870 kg/m³) and VIR MAXPRO (HDFWR). Compare them in MDF vs HDHMR.

Fire-retardant MDF

Fire-retardant MDF carries flame-retarding treatment for offices, shops and hotels. Published examples: Greenpanel FRMDF (REG Grade), CenturyPly Fire Smart Panel (Class 1 under ASTM E84-2021, per its user manual) and Greenply Boil Pro 500, which Greenply describes as fire retardant to IS 5509.

Low-emission MDF

BIS recognises only two formaldehyde classes for MDF, E1 and E2. Labels such as E0, E0.5 and CARB P2 are brand claims tested to other standards. Greenpanel offers CARB P2 MDF and an E0.5 grade (formaldehyde content up to 4.0 mg per 100 g), Greenply sells CARB P2 MDF that it markets as zero-emission, and Action TESA describes its MDF as CARB-certified in E0, E1 and E2 grades. See What Is E0 MDF?.

MDF board thickness chart: which thickness for which job

Use 18mm for wardrobe and kitchen carcasses, 12mm for panel inserts and light partitions, 5.5-8mm for drawer bottoms and backs, and 25-30mm for heavy tops and frames.

The chart follows CenturyPly's carpenter manual and Action TESA's thickness guidance.

ThicknessTypical jobsWorking note
1.5-4mm (thin MDF)Panel backs, decorative overlays, wall and ceiling cladding (CenturyPly's Artz embossed MDF is 2.3mm), craft and CNC workGlue or pin to a frame; no screws or nails into edges
5.5-8mmDrawer bottoms (5.5-8mm), mirror backs (5.5-7mm), photo-lamination backs (8mm), double-skin partitions (8mm)CenturyPly's pre-laminated boards start at this thickness (5.5mm)
9-12mmPanel inserts in door shutters (12mm), picture frames (12mm), single-skin partitions (12mm); Action TESA suggests roughly 9-12mm for cabinet doors and shuttersCenturyPly's manual says no screws or nails into edges of boards 12mm and thinner
16-18mmWardrobes and storage units (mainly 18mm), kitchen cabinet sides, shelves and shutters (18mm), pelmets (18mm), study tables (12-18mm)Gauge 8 screws with 3mm pilot holes, drilled 2-3mm deeper than the screw
22-30mmDesks and tables (18-25mm), kitchen cabinet frames and flooring in the water-resistant grade (25-30mm), cornices (18-30mm), beds (12-30mm)Gauge 10 screws with 3.5mm pilot holes for 25mm and above

Check what "18mm" means on your quote. Brands list 16.5mm, 16.75mm, 17mm and 18mm as separate thicknesses, and prices differ, so make sure the quote and invoice name the exact figure. Measure a sample with a vernier: IS 12406:2025 allows ±0.3mm.

If a part will carry heavy hinges or loads, compare plywood first: Plywood vs MDF for Furniture.

Standard MDF sheet sizes in India

The 8x4 ft sheet (2440 x 1220 mm, 32 sq ft) is the standard MDF size in India; 8x6 ft and 6x4 ft sheets are also listed by brands.

Size (ft)Size (mm)Area (sq ft)Listed by

10x43050 x 122040Greenply (general MDF size list)
6x31830 x 91518Greenply (general MDF size list)

IS 12406:2025 lists standard lengths from 915mm to 5490mm and widths from 305mm to 1830mm, and allows other sizes if the maker declares them. When comparing quotes, convert to per sq ft, because an 8x6 sheet has 50% more area than an 8x4.

Weight matters for handling and wall-hung units. A PlyPrice estimate (method: sheet volume multiplied by Greenpanel's stated density of 710-720 kg/m³ for 12-19mm Interior MDF) puts an 18mm 8x4 sheet at about 38 kg; the same sheet at 850 kg/m³, typical of high-density moisture-resistant boards, works out to about 46 kg.

MDF density: what the numbers tell you

MDF density in India runs from 600 to 900 kg/m³ under IS 12406:2025, and brand data shows thin sheets pressed denser than thick ones.

BoardPublished density (kg/m³)Where it is published

Density alone does not tell you the moisture grade: Greenpanel's Interior and Exterior MDF share the same 710-720 kg/m³ band at 12-19mm, yet only the Exterior board is MR grade. Check the grade printed on the board.

Pre-laminated and coloured MDF

Pre-laminated MDF is MDF with melamine-impregnated decorative paper pressed onto one or both faces in the factory, so it arrives in a finished colour or woodgrain.

BIS covers it under IS 14587:2025, which requires the base board to meet IS 12406 and grades the surface by abrasion resistance:

Type in IS 14587:2025Intended useMinimum abrasion resistance (revolutions)
Type 1Flooring1,000
Type 2Horizontal counter and table tops450
Type 3Normal horizontal furniture tops250
Type 4Vertical panelling, partitions and false ceilings75

Brands sell pre-lam boards laminated on one side (OSL) or both sides (BSL), mostly in matt and suede textures. Greenpanel shows 150+ shades across its Classic and Exquisite collections, Greenply has Prelam Perfect and Elegant ranges, CenturyPly's pre-lam starts at 5.5mm, and VIR prelam runs from 4.6mm to 25mm. Action TESA also lists UV and acrylic high-gloss boards and Abraze, a pre-laminated MDF it says withstands 999+ abrasion revolutions.

Use BSL where both faces show, since CenturyPly's manual asks for both faces to be finished alike to prevent warping, and edge-band every cut edge. For a painted colour on plain MDF, CenturyPly recommends polyurethane primer with synthetic enamel or oil-based paint, not water-based paint. See also Types of Laminates in India.

MDF vs HDF vs HDHMR-type boards vs plywood vs particle board

Choose MDF for smooth painted or laminated furniture in dry rooms, an MR-grade or HDHMR-type board for humid kitchens, and plywood where screws, loads or direct water are involved.

How to buy and verify MDF

Buy by grade and exact thickness, then verify the ISI licence, the board marking and the delivered price before you pay.

  1. Read the board marking. IS 12406:2025 requires each board to show the maker's name or trademark, the grade and formaldehyde class, nominal length, width and thickness, a batch number and the date of manufacture.
  2. Check the ISI licence. Note the CM/L number (CM/L- followed by 10 digits) beside the ISI mark and check it in the BIS Care app (Verify Licence Details) or on Manak Online (Status of Licence). The licence should cover IS 12406 and name the same manufacturer. Step-by-step help: How to Check ISI Mark and CML Number.
  3. Match the grade to the room. REG for dry bedrooms and living rooms; MR or a high-density moisture-resistant board for kitchens, bathrooms and humid coastal homes.
  4. Inspect a cut edge and the sheet. The core should be even and compact with no voids or soft patches, the sheet should lie flat, and edges should show no swelling from damp storage. Measure thickness with a vernier.
  5. Get it in writing. The invoice should name brand, product, grade, exact thickness, sheet size and quantity. Ask for the warranty card where the brand offers one, and keep emission or termite claims in writing.
  6. Compare delivered prices. Ask for per-sheet prices with GST, loading, transport and cutting shown separately. Current rates are in MDF Board Price in India.
  7. Store it right on site. CenturyPly's manual says to stack MDF flat on dry, level battens, off the floor and away from sunlight, and to let it acclimatise for 48-72 hours before cutting.

FAQs

What are the different types of MDF board?

Under IS 12406:2025, MDF comes in REG (regular, for dry rooms), MR (moisture resistant) and HMR (high moisture resistance) grades. Brands also sell fire-retardant, low-emission, high-density and pre-laminated MDF. Pick the grade for the room first, then the thickness.

Which MDF thickness is best for wardrobes and kitchen cabinets?

18mm is the standard for wardrobes and for kitchen cabinet sides, shelves and shutters, as CenturyPly's carpenter manual recommends. Use 12mm for panel inserts and light partitions, 5.5-8mm for drawer bottoms and backs, and 25mm for heavy tables and frames.

What is the standard size of an MDF sheet in India?

The standard sheet is 8x4 ft (2440 x 1220 mm), which is 32 sq ft. Greenpanel and VIR MDF also list 8x6 ft (2440 x 1830 mm) and 6x4 ft sheets, and Greenply lists 10x4 ft and 6x3 ft among MDF sizes.

Is exterior grade MDF waterproof?

No: "exterior" is a trade name for moisture-resistant MDF, which handles humidity and occasional splashes but not soaking or standing water. Action TESA describes its MR/Exterior board as suited to covered, non-wet exposure; see Is MDF Waterproof or Termite Proof? for wet-area limits.

What is the difference between MDF and HDF?

HDF is pressed to a higher density. MDF under IS 12406:2025 sits in the 600-900 kg/m³ band, while an HDF such as Greenpanel BoilBLACK BWP HDF is listed at 1,100 kg/m³. HDF suits doors, flooring and panels that need hardness or water resistance.

Engineered wood vs MDF: which is better?

MDF is itself a type of engineered wood, so the real choice is between MDF, plywood, particle board and HDF. MDF gives the smoothest paint and laminate finish in dry rooms, while plywood holds screws more firmly and comes in BWR and BWP grades for wet areas.

Is the ISI mark mandatory for MDF?

Yes. MDF has needed the ISI mark under IS 12406 since February 2025 under a BIS Quality Control Order. Check the CM/L number in the BIS Care app or on Manak Online before you buy.

Sources and method: Grades, swelling limits, standard thicknesses and sizes, tolerances, density, moisture content, marking and formaldehyde classes are from the BIS standard IS 12406:2025 (BIS listing), and pre-laminated MDF types from IS 14587:2025 (BIS listing). The 9 August 2026 transition date is from a BIS circular of 18 February 2026.
