What is Action TESA Boilo board?
Boilo is a boiling water proof (BWP), fire-retardant HDF board made by Action TESA (Balaji Action Buildwell), sold in plain and prelaminated versions.
Action TESA calls it "Boilo-BWP-FR-HDF Board" and describes it as a high density fibre board that stays stable in wet conditions. It is a single-core board, which Action TESA says has "zero core gaps", unlike plywood built from pasted veneers. For how HDF differs from MDF and plywood in general, see what is HDF board.
Action TESA lists these uses: toilet cubicles and bathroom partitions, bathroom vanities, moist-area furniture, wall panelling, stage flooring, container, truck and bus floors, warehouse shelves, staircases and food trucks. A June 2025 article on its site adds kitchens and washroom cubicles, and says many customers use it for whole-home furniture.
Boilo thickness and sheet sizes
Action TESA's Boilo matrix, updated 2 February 2026, lists six thicknesses from 5.5 mm to 18 mm, all in 8x4 ft, with 12 mm and 18 mm also in 8x6 ft.
| Thickness | Matrix remark | 8x4 ft | 8x6 ft | Suggested use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5.5 mm | New | Yes | No | Backs, wall panelling |
| 8 mm | Existing | Yes | No | Panelling, light partitions |
| 12 mm | Existing | Yes | Yes | Toilet cubicles, partitions |
| 16 mm | Existing | Yes | No | Shutters, vanities |
| 16.75 mm | New | Yes | No | Shutters, prelam work |
| 18 mm | Existing | Yes | Yes | Carcasses, sink bases, shelves |
The product page itself shows 12 mm in 8x6 ft, so the larger sheet suits tall cubicle panels with fewer joints. Because the matrix lists 16, 16.75 and 18 mm side by side, write the exact thickness on your order and check it on delivery. The suggested uses are general carpentry practice, not Action TESA instructions.

All rows are IndiaMART listings seen on 3 November 2026. Listings do not say whether GST, transport or cutting is included, and a single rate quoted across several thicknesses should be read as a starting price. The Pune ladder, priced per sheet for each thickness, is the most reliable guide to how price climbs with thickness.
Two habits keep quotes comparable. Ask for the rate per sheet of a named thickness, plain or prelam, and ask whether it includes GST; check the GST rate and HSN code printed on the invoice. For more Action TESA rates, see the Action TESA price list.
Claimed properties: what Action TESA says about Boilo
Action TESA makes five main claims for Boilo; treat them as manufacturer claims and ask the dealer for the supporting certificates.
- Water: boiling water proof, with low water absorption, minimal thickness swelling and reduced linear expansion. The product page does not name a boil-test standard or duration.
- Density and dents: above 1,000 kg/m³ overall and 1,180 kg/m³ at the surface, which Action TESA says makes it highly dent resistant.
- Fire: fire retardant, complying with IS 5509, and in an April 2024 article "Flame Retardant 3 Times more" than the passing parameter of IS 5509:2000.
- Termites and borers: certified borer and termite proof by a one-year test from IPIRTI (Indian Plywood Industries Research and Training Institute).
- Screws and rigidity: screw holding that stays stable even in boiling water, and rigidity six times the IS 10701 requirement for structural plywood. The product page gives no screw withdrawal figure.
Action TESA also compares Boilo with BWP plywood on its applications page, saying plywood absorbs about seven times more water with about twice the thickness swelling; no test method is given there. For balance, BWP plywood's water resistance is proven by the BIS test in IS 303, a 72-hour boil. No emission class (E1 or E2) is listed on the Boilo product page, so ask for it if formaldehyde matters to you.
Boilo vs Action TESA HDHMR vs BWP plywood
Boilo is the wet-area board in Action TESA's range, Action TESA HDHMR is the moisture-resistant board for shutters and furniture, and BWP plywood is the BIS-graded waterproof alternative sold by many brands.
Buyers often use "HDHMR" as a general term for high-density moisture-resistant boards; the comparison below uses Action TESA's own product, Action TESA HDHMR. For other brands' boards of this type, see the best HDHMR-type board brands.
| Attribute | Action TESA Boilo | Action TESA HDHMR | BWP plywood |

Weights are PlyPrice estimates (method: 2.44 m x 1.22 m x 0.018 m x density; 1,000 kg/m³ for Boilo, 850 kg/m³ for Action TESA HDHMR, and 700 kg/m³ for plywood, the figure Greenply publishes for its Optima G MR plywood). For reference, CenturyPly (Century Plyboards India) publishes one national price including GST of ₹122 per sq ft for Sainik 710 and ₹171 per sq ft for Club Prime, checked in October 2026.
Which one to choose
Pick Boilo where water reaches the board directly or fire safety matters: sink bases, under-basin storage, vanities and toilet cubicles. Pick Action TESA HDHMR for kitchen and wardrobe shutters away from the sink, where a smooth, routable surface and a lower price matter more. Pick BWP plywood when you want a BIS-tested grade with wide dealer availability, or when the carpenter prefers plywood for edge screwing and joinery. For the HDHMR side in detail, read MDF vs HDHMR, is HDHMR waterproof and the HDHMR-type board price guide.
Where Boilo suits Indian kitchens and bathrooms
Boilo earns its higher price in the wettest parts of an Indian home, where water reaches the board directly and the price premium buys a stronger water claim.
Kitchen sink base and under-basin storage
Indian kitchens are often wet-mopped, and sink cabinets face leaks from traps and taps. An 18 mm Boilo carcass under the sink, with sealed cut-outs for plumbing, is a reasonable upgrade over moisture-resistant board, and the remaining cabinets can use a cheaper board.
Bathroom vanities and toilet cubicles
Action TESA lists bathroom vanities, bathroom partitions and restroom toilet cubicles among Boilo's uses. For cubicles, 12 mm or 18 mm in 8x6 ft reduces joints, and its fire-retardant claim is relevant in offices, malls and schools.
Coastal cities and monsoon months
In Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata or Kochi, humidity stays high for months, so the wet zones matter most. Use Boilo or BWP plywood where water splashes, edge-band every cut, and keep a gap between the board and a wet floor.
Where it is over-specified
Bedroom wardrobes, TV units and study tables rarely see water. There, Action TESA HDHMR, BWR plywood or MR plywood does the job at a lower cost and weight; see MR vs BWR vs BWP plywood.
How to buy and verify Boilo board
Confirm the product, thickness and paperwork before you pay, because Boilo prices vary widely between sellers.
- Name the product exactly. Ask for "Action TESA Boilo", plain or prelam, with thickness (5.5, 8, 12, 16, 16.75 or 18 mm) and size (8x4 or 8x6 ft).
- Buy from an authorised dealer. Confirm the dealer's status through Action TESA's website before you pay an advance.
- Check the BIS details. Ask which IS standard and CM/L licence apply to the board, then verify the "CM/L-" plus 10-digit number in the BIS Care app (Verify Licence Details) or on Manak Online (Status of Licence). The ISI mark check guide shows the steps.
- Measure and weigh. Check thickness at four corners. At above 1,000 kg/m³, an 18 mm 8x4 sheet should feel clearly heavier than plywood of the same size.
- Get the paperwork. Take a GST invoice naming the product, thickness and size, and ask for the warranty card, since the warranty page lists no terms.
- Confirm the delivered price. Ask for the per-sheet rate including GST, transport, loading and cutting.
