Types of laminates in India: quick answer
The main types of laminates in India are decorative high pressure laminate (HPL, sold as sunmica, usually 0.6-1.5 mm), low pressure laminate (LPL) fused onto MDF or particle board as prelam, compact laminate of 2 mm and above for toilets, counters and facades, PVC laminate, and the acrylic and PU high-gloss shutter finishes. Decorative HPL is covered by IS 2046, which BIS has revised to match ISO 4586.
| Type | How it is made | Thickness | Finishes | Where to use | Price band (source) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Decorative HPL (sunmica) | Kraft and printed decor paper bonded with resins under high pressure | 0.6-1.5 mm | Suede, matte, gloss, textured, metallic | Wardrobes, kitchen shutters, tables, walls | 1 mm: ₹1,100-1,850 per 8x4 sheet (IndiaMART, Nov 2026) |
| Liner laminate | Thin, plain HPL for hidden faces | About 0.6-0.92 mm | Suede or matt, mostly white | Wardrobe and kitchen interiors, shutter backs | ₹300-700 per sheet (IndiaMART, ibo.com, Nov 2026) |
| LPL or prelam board (MFC) | Melamine-soaked decor paper fused onto particle board, MDF or HDF at low pressure | Part of the board | Matte, light textures | Carcasses, shelves, office furniture | Bought as a board |
| Postforming laminate | Thinner HPL that bends around rounded edges | Thinner than standard | As decorative HPL | Rounded tabletops and counters | No verified listing band |
| Compact laminate | Many kraft layers pressed into a self-supporting panel | 2-25 mm (Greenlam), 2-30 mm (Virgo) | Solid colours, wood grains | Toilet partitions, lockers, lab tops, cladding | 6 mm: ₹100-330 per sq ft; 12-14 mm: ₹220-254 per sq ft (IndiaMART, Nov 2026) |
| PVC laminate | Flexible PVC-based decorative sheet | About 0.5-1.5 mm in listings | Gloss, matte, marble prints | Shutters, curved surfaces | 1-1.5 mm: ₹1,250-2,500 per 8x4 sheet (IndiaMART, Nov 2026) |
| Acrylic laminate | Sheet with a clear acrylic (PMMA) top layer, pressed onto shutters | Ask for stated thickness | High gloss, mirror-like | Kitchen and wardrobe shutters | No verified listing band |
| PU finish | Polyurethane paint sprayed on MDF shutters and cured | A coating, not a sheet | Any colour, matte to gloss | Custom-colour shutters | Quoted per sq ft; no verified band |
| Design laminates | Phenolic core with a metal, wood veneer or pearlescent surface | Ask for stated thickness | Metallic, veneer, pearlescent | Feature walls, showpiece furniture | No verified listing band |
Sunmica is a brand name, but Indian buyers, carpenters and many dealer listings use it as a generic word for any decorative laminate sheet; in this guide it means decorative HPL. For rates by thickness and finish, see the sunmica price guide.
HPL vs LPL: how they are made and where each fits
HPL is a separate sheet that the carpenter glues onto plywood, MDF or particle board, while LPL is decor paper fused onto the board at the factory, so LPL is bought as a ready prelam board, not as a sheet.
Greenlam (Greenlam Industries) describes HPL as kraft paper compressed with thermosetting resins under high pressure, with regular 0.6-1.5 mm sheets needing an adhesive to bond to the base. LPL is decorative paper soaked in melamine resin and applied directly over particle board or fibreboard (MDF, HDF) under low pressure. Greenlam's range includes MFC (melamine faced chipboard), which is this kind of board, and its guidance pairs HPL with plywood and LPL with MDF.
| Point | HPL (sunmica) | LPL (prelam) |
|---|---|---|
| What you buy | A loose sheet, usually 8x4 ft | A board with the decor fused on |
| Who applies it | The carpenter, with adhesive | The factory |
| Typical base | Plywood, MDF, particle board | Particle board, MDF, HDF |
| Typical use | Shutters, tabletops, visible faces | Carcasses, shelves, office furniture |
Use HPL where a surface takes wear or needs a specific design, and LPL boards where a factory finish is enough. Compare LPL boards with MDF board prices plus on-site laminating cost, and see particle board vs MDF for the base.
The HPL family: liner, postforming, design and speciality laminates
Most laminates sold in India are HPL sheets under 2 mm, which BIS covers in IS 2046 (Part 3) for laminates less than 2 mm thick bonded to a supporting board; beyond decorative sheets, they come in four working types.
Liner laminate
A liner is a thin, plain sheet for wardrobe interiors, kitchen carcasses and the back of shutters, where it also balances the decorative face. CenturyLaminates (Century Plyboards India) places 0.6 mm in closets and pantry shelves, Virgo (Virgo Laminates) lists a Next Liner 0.7 mm series, and 0.7-0.92 mm liners were listed at ₹300-700 per sheet in November 2026.
Postforming laminate
Postforming laminate is a thinner HPL that bends around a rounded edge, so a tabletop or counter can have a curved front without a joint; Greenlam describes postformed laminates as thinner than standard sheets and used as wraparounds. IS 2046 (Part 2) includes a formability test, so ask for that result if you need a tight curve.
Design and metallic laminates
IS 2046 (Part 7) covers interior design laminates with a phenolic core and a metal, wood veneer or pearlescent decor surface. Greenlam describes metal-look laminates as having a reflective top decor layer and suggests them for showroom wall panels and office cabinet doors.
Speciality grades
Greenlam lists anti-fingerprint (AFX), antibacterial, fire retardant, chalk grade, marker grade and ESD (static-control) laminates; Virgo lists Spotless anti-fingerprint sheets and fire-retardant and anti-bacterial properties on selected ranges; CenturyLaminates promotes a ViroKill technology. Ask for the test certificate for the property you pay for.
Compact and exterior laminates
Compact laminate is HPL made 2 mm or thicker so that it stands on its own without a board behind it, which is why it is used for toilet partitions, lockers, lab tops, counters and facades.
BIS covers compact sheets in IS 2046 (Part 4) and exterior-grade compact sheets in IS 2046 (Part 6), which sets four grades for outdoor use in sun, rain and frost:
| Grade (IS 2046 Part 6) | Outdoor exposure | Type |
|---|---|---|
| EGS | Moderate | Standard |
| EGF | Moderate | Flame retardant |
| EDS | Severe | Standard |
| EDF | Severe | Flame retardant |
Greenlam lists compact sheets from 2 mm to 25 mm, with lines for laboratories (Lab Guardian), interior and exterior cladding, and restroom cubicles and lockers. Virgo lists 2-30 mm in 8x4 ft and 7x3.25 ft sizes, gives 12-13 mm as the standard for toilet partitions and countertops, and describes its compact sheets as waterproof and suitable for wet areas, indoors or outdoors.
In November 2026 IndiaMART listings, 6 mm exterior HPL cost ₹100-330 per sq ft (₹3,200-10,560 per 8x4 sheet) and 12-14 mm sheets ₹220-254 per sq ft. For facades, ask which Part 6 grade the sheet meets and for the supplier's fixing method.
Acrylic vs PU vs PVC: high-gloss options compared
Acrylic and PVC laminates are sheets pressed onto a board, while PU is a paint finish sprayed onto the board; all three are chosen mainly for shutter fronts where buyers want a smooth gloss or a solid colour.
Acrylic laminate has a clear acrylic (PMMA) top layer that gives a deep, mirror-like gloss; like any high-gloss surface it shows fingerprints and fine scratches more than suede or matte. PU (polyurethane) is a paint system sprayed in coats on MDF shutters and cured; it can be mixed to almost any colour and sheen, and a scratched shutter can be re-sprayed, but results depend on the workshop, so see finished samples first. PVC laminate is a flexible plastic-based sheet that Virgo describes as a variation of traditional mica laminates.
| Point | Acrylic laminate | PU finish | PVC laminate | Gloss HPL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Sheet with acrylic top layer | Sprayed paint coating | Flexible PVC sheet | High pressure laminate sheet |
| Colour choice | Brand catalogue | Almost any colour | Brand catalogue | Brand catalogue |
| If scratched | Re-face or replace shutter | Can be re-sprayed | Re-face or replace | Re-face or replace |
| Price evidence (Nov 2026) | Not verified; get a written quote | Not verified; get a written quote | ₹1,250-2,500 per 8x4 sheet (1-1.5 mm) | ₹1,400-1,850 per 8x4 sheet (1 mm) |
Gloss or anti-fingerprint HPL is the easiest to price and to match later, acrylic suits buyers who want a deeper gloss, and PU suits custom colours. The board decides how any shutter handles moisture: see best plywood for kitchen cabinets, and membrane vs laminate shutters for another option.
Laminate finishes explained
A finish is the surface texture and sheen of the sheet, and it decides how much fingerprints, scratches and dust show, so pick it by the room as much as by the look.
| Finish | What it looks like | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Suede or matt (often SF or SUD) | Low sheen; shows fewer fingerprints than gloss | Wardrobes, kitchen shutters |
| Super matt or satin | Very low sheen; Greenlam Satin is listed as super matt | Modern kitchens and wardrobes |
| Anti-fingerprint | Ultra matt, designed to resist smudges (Greenlam AFX, Virgo Spotless) | Dark or high-touch shutters |
| Gloss and high gloss | Reflective; Greenlam HD Gloss is listed as a mirror finish | TV units, display shutters |
| Textured and synchronised | Raised wood or stone grain; synchronised textures follow the print | Wardrobes, wall panels |
| Fluted | Vertical 3D stripes (Greenlam Lexus, 1.50 mm) | Feature shutters and walls |
| Metallic | Reflective metal look from a top decor layer | Showrooms, office cabinet doors |
| Fabric and leather | Woven or leather-like texture; Greenlam lists both design categories | Bedrooms, feature walls |
Finish codes are brand-specific: on one Greenlam product page, SUD is suede, SAT satin, SGL super gloss, SHR shore and FWN fawn, so write the code on your order. Textured and fluted grooves hold dust, and CenturyLaminates notes that its textured laminates start at 1 mm. See the fabric laminate guide for fabric textures.
Laminate thickness guide
Use 0.6-0.8 mm for interiors and light-use faces, 1 mm for daily-use surfaces such as kitchen shutters, 1.25-1.5 mm for busy commercial surfaces, and 2 mm or more (compact) where the laminate must stand on its own.
| Thickness | What brands say | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 0.6 mm | CenturyLaminates: closets, laundry rooms, pantry shelves; not kitchen countertops | Liners, wardrobe interiors |
| 0.7-0.8 mm | Greenlam: cabinetry and light furniture; CenturyLaminates: tables and desks; Virgo: wardrobes and kitchen shutters | Wardrobe shutters, study tables |
| 1 mm | CenturyLaminates: high-traffic areas including kitchens; Greenlam: everyday use | Kitchen shutters, dining tables |
| 1.25 mm | Greenlam: high-traffic or commercial areas | Shop counters, office desks |
| 1.5 mm | CenturyLaminates: busy commercial areas | Commercial counters |
| 2 mm and above | Greenlam: 2-25 mm; Virgo: 2-30 mm, 12-13 mm standard for partitions and countertops | Partitions, lockers, cladding |
Within these ranges, Greenlam and CenturyLaminates publish 0.6-1.5 mm decorative sheets and Virgo lists 0.72, 0.8, 1, 1.25 and 1.5 mm. Thickness is hard to judge by eye, so measure a sheet with a vernier caliper before cutting, and see 12mm vs 18mm plywood for the board underneath.
Kitchen and bathroom guidance for Indian homes
In kitchens, use 1 mm laminate on shutters with a liner on the back and a water-resistant board underneath; in bathrooms, use compact laminate for anything that stays wet, because a thin laminate protects only the face of a board, not its edges or core.
Kitchens
- Use 1 mm on shutters, as CenturyLaminates recommends for kitchens; Greenlam suggests 1.25 mm for high-traffic areas.
- Pick anti-fingerprint or matt finishes for dark shutters; Greenlam lists AFX as heat, stain, scratch and hydro-resistant.
- Put a liner on the back of every shutter and edge-band every exposed edge, especially near the sink, hob and dishwasher.
- Use BWR plywood for carcasses. For sink units use BWP plywood, which is tested with a 72-hour boil under IS 303:2024; see MR vs BWR vs BWP plywood.
- For laminate countertops, use a countertop or compact grade: Greenlam lists Countertop and Infinia Countertop lines, and Virgo gives 12-13 mm compact for countertops.
Bathrooms and wet areas
- Use compact laminate for toilet partitions, splash-zone panels and vanity fronts; Virgo lists bathroom vanities and partitions among its compact uses.
- For a plywood vanity with thin laminate, use BWP plywood, seal every edge and keep the unit off the wet floor.
Coastal cities and the monsoon
In Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata and other humid cities, store sheets flat in a dry room and buy all sheets for a job from one batch so later top-ups match. For MDF in damp rooms, see whether MDF is waterproof or termite proof.
How to verify laminate type, thickness and certification
Confirm the type on the invoice, measure the thickness, and check the standard and licence before the sheets are pressed, because a glued sheet cannot be swapped.
- Name the type on the quote: decorative HPL, liner, compact, PVC or acrylic, with thickness, size, design code and finish code.
- Measure thickness at two or three edges with a vernier caliper and compare with the invoice.
- Know the standard. BIS has revised IS 2046 into an eight-part series identical to ISO 4586, and its circular of 24 February 2026 lets IS 2046:1995 and the new parts run together until 24 March 2027, so a certificate may cite either edition.
- Check the ISI licence. If the sheet or pack carries the ISI mark, check its CM/L number (CM/L- followed by 10 digits) in the BIS Care app (Verify Licence Details) or on Manak Online (Status of Licence), as in how to check the ISI mark and CM/L number.
- Ask for test results. IS 2046 (Part 2) test methods cover surface wear, scratch, impact, stain, heat, water and light resistance, dimensional stability and formability; for exterior compact, ask for the Part 6 grade.
- Check batch and faces on every sheet before signing for delivery, and keep the GST invoice and any brand warranty card with the design codes.

FAQs
What is the difference between HPL and LPL?
HPL is a separate sheet pressed from kraft paper and resin at high pressure, which a carpenter glues onto plywood or MDF. LPL is decor paper soaked in melamine resin and fused onto particle board or MDF at the factory, so it comes as a prelam board. Use HPL for visible, hard-working surfaces and LPL boards for carcasses.
Which is better for a kitchen, acrylic or PU?
Acrylic suits buyers who want a deep factory gloss in catalogue colours and accept regular wiping; PU suits buyers who want a custom colour or matte sheen and the option to re-spray later. Neither had a verified price band in the November 2026 listings checked, so compare written quotes.
What is compact laminate used for?
Compact laminate is self-supporting HPL of 2 mm or more, used for toilet partitions, lockers, laboratory tops, countertops and exterior cladding. Virgo gives 12-13 mm as the standard for partitions and countertops, and IS 2046 (Part 6) sets EGS, EGF, EDS and EDF grades for exterior use.
What is the standard thickness of a laminate sheet?
Most decorative laminate listings are 0.8 mm or 1 mm, within brand ranges of 0.6-1.5 mm (Greenlam, CenturyLaminates) and 0.72-1.5 mm (Virgo). Use 1 mm for kitchens and daily-wear surfaces and 0.8 mm for wardrobes and light furniture.
What is a liner laminate?
A liner is a thin, plain laminate of about 0.6-0.92 mm, used inside wardrobes and kitchen units and on the back of shutters. Liners were listed at ₹300-700 per 8x4 sheet in November 2026.
Is laminate waterproof?
A laminate face resists moisture, but a thin sheet does not make the board under it waterproof, because water gets in through edges, joints and screw holes. For wet areas, use compact laminate or a BWP board with every edge sealed.
